Overview of project
With over 25 horticulture projects worldwide, SNV actively engages with the private sector, being convinced of the crucial role private sector has in furthering agriculture value chains for both domestic and international markets. SNV’s Inclusive Business approach combines private sector development with inclusive growth objectives. Reducing food losses and increasing value chain efficiencies, improving food safety, inclusion of entrepreneurial small holders, climate smart agriculture and other themes play an important role in all our agriculture projects.
With ongoing large scale horticulture projects in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and Cambodia, SNV offers a proven market based approach for the horticulture sector to address the problems of smallholders, suppliers, processing companies, retailers as well as consumers. SNV brings together stakeholders and builds capacities of value chain actors to increase the efficiency of horticulture supply chains, improve food safety and reduce food losses, while increasing business opportunities. We draw on our decades-long experience as an implementer using best practices in agriculture production, supply chain management, market-based solutions, and strengthening public institutions and service providers to develop agriculture markets at scale.
With several high value horticulture projects currently operating in the region as well as several new projects in the pipeline, SNV is looking to hire several high caliber, seasoned project managers to manage anticipated upcoming high value horticulture projects in the Africa region. These positions will be based in the countries where projects are being implemented.
• Provide leadership to all consortium members in order to ensure excellent program delivery.
• Execute overall project management
• Guide the project set-up, including developing work plans, budgets and competence table with financial responsibilities and mandates
• Build, strengthen and manage partnerships with regional governments, key partners, institutions and stakeholders;
• Manage donor relations
• Overall management of all human, physical and financial resources related to the project;
• Monitor performance of the project management team to ensure all milestones set in the annual work plan are met, develop mitigation plans to reduce risks and take corrective actions to remedy any deviation from the work plans;
• Account and report to SNV and the donor on project performance;
• Guide knowledge development, documentation and communication and branding in close collaboration with donor
• Identify follow-up funding and partnership possibilities and business development.
• Identify market oriented, commercial horticulture product market combinations (Business Cases), in close cooperation with stakeholders, in particular with traders, buyers and end users of horticulture in respective countries and abroad;
• Facilitate business matchmaking and market access: negotiate strategic alliances between partners; organize business meetings and facilitate meetings to discuss and develop Supply Chain Business Cases and to reach consensus between supply chain partners.
• Create linkages with other Horticulture implementors or development partners working in target country.
• Contribute to business development for new agriculture projects within the country program.
• At least an MSc / MA Degree in economics, business administration, agribusiness or marketing, or relevant discipline.
• At least 15 years of professional experience in private sector development projects, including market facilitation and business development in the public as well as in the private sector, preferably in Africa;
• At least 10 years of demonstrated, successful, professional experience as a Team Leader or Deputy Team Leader. Solid experience in project management, fund management and budgeting, preferably at least 8 years of which at least three years in a difficult context.
• Several years of experience with market development, value chain analysis and inclusive business;
• Excellent organizational skills are a must in order to keep up with the various demands and competing priorities of the project.
• Excellent social and networking skills, ability to engage with the private sector, civil society, donors and governments;
• An extreme eye for detail is a must in preparing reports as well as organizing meetings with various stakeholders in the project.
• Multidisciplinary profile to support the different specialists in the team.
• Able to keep track (across multiple countries) of project priorities, commitments, and follow up with PM’s.
• Experience in Monitoring and Evaluation.
• Demonstrated experience managing various stakeholders.
• A broad knowledge base of project/programme management and hands-on experience with capacity building and institutional change as well as team leadership and good knowledge of aspects of fresh and processed agro-food sector, horticulture, and agricultural supply chains in Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria specifically;
• Experience in or exposure to project development and management at sector/systemic level, including horticultural/agricultural supply chain pilots and capacity building/institutional development;
• Be a strong relationship builder with sound experience and understanding of building and maintaining professional relationships with (senior) government officials as well as policy makers and industry leaders, both in the Netherlands, and the field;
• Strong experience in with private sector development related to horticulture.
• Experience building capacity of smallholder and emerging commercial producers is considered an asset.
• Excellent communication (written and oral), reporting and presentation skills;
• Fluency in English is required (French is an advantage);
• Willingness to travel to all project locations.
• Experience in horticulture, potato sector, nutrition sensitive agriculture, fragile economies, and seed sector will be an advantage.
• Experience working in agriculture/horticulture field in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda or Rwanda is an asset.
• Ability to work and promote teams is critical.
• Good networks in the Nigerian, Kenyan, Rwandan/Ugandan horticulture sector is considered an asset;
• Excellent understanding/contacts of Dutch horticulture companies and what drives development of these companies is an asset.
• Demonstrated capacity to assure timely, quality, and compliant reporting, in correct professional English, in accordance with donor requirements;
Contract Duration: 2 years full -time international employment contract, with strong possibility of extension
Expected Start Date: Q4 2019 dependent on anticipated awards.
